PROFESSIONAL RESUME TIPS
In today's job market, an executive or senior professional must convince employers that he or she is better than 90% of other candidates. Therefore, you must have an executive resume that sets you apart from other executives. Executive searches are highly selective and your resume must work as your own strategic marketing tool.
Remember that, when writing your resume, it must be easy to read. Sometimes your resume may be one of 200 submissions, so the presentation is very important. The following is a list of helpful hints:
- Typically, your resume is given an initial scan by a recruiter. If your resume doesn't capture the reviewer's attention immediately, all your years of hard work and experience may be missed.
- It is best to start your resume with a Qualifications Summary -- a summary that "bullet points" your skills, abilities, personal attributes and achievements. This statement should convince the reviewer that he or she should read the rest of your resume.
- Speak to your achievements! Nothing on your resume is more impressive than how you contributed to your current and/or previous employer's success.
- Chronological resumes are best with duties and achievements under each position.
- Qualification summaries are a good idea. This gives the reviewer a snapshot of your background.
- Always use bullet points instead of paragraphs to list your most prominent responsibilities and achievements.
- Give a brief description of your current and previous employers. This includes size and description of company. Even though you may know all about the company, the person reviewing your resume may not.
- Avoid "buzz words." Write your resume so that anyone who reads it will understand what you do.
- Two-page resumes are best at a management level. Senior level professionals should be able to give a snapshot of their career in two pages.
- If your title is something used specifically by the company, it is best to change it to a generic title as long as you address this in interview.
You should have more than one resume to highlight different areas of expertise. As long as your resume is easy to read with highlights of your career experience, qualifications and achievements, you are off to a good start. The following is an example of an executive resume that stands out!
